A fridge freezer losing its cool is the fault that won't wait — there's food riding on it. The good news is that several common causes are things you can check yourself in a few minutes. Work through these before assuming the worst.
1. The thermostat setting
Start with the boring one: has the dial or digital setting been knocked? A bottle put away carelessly can turn a thermostat dial, and on some models the buttons are easily caught while cleaning. Check it's where you normally keep it before anything else.
2. The door seal
Close the door on a strip of paper. If it slides out without resistance, the seal isn't gripping there — and warm air is leaking in constantly, making the appliance run flat out and still lose temperature. Check all four sides. Perished seals are a straightforward repair.
3. Ventilation
Fridge freezers need airflow around the back and top to shed heat. If yours is boxed in tightly, or the grille at the back is thick with dust, it will struggle in warm weather. Pull it out gently and let it breathe — you'd be surprised how often this is the whole story in summer.
4. Ice build-up
Heavy frost inside the freezer compartment can block the vents that circulate cold air to the fridge, so the freezer seems fine while the fridge runs warm. If there's serious ice, a controlled defrost may restore things — but if the ice returns quickly, the auto-defrost system has a fault that needs an engineer.
5. The sounds it makes
A healthy fridge freezer hums quietly and clicks occasionally as the compressor cycles. Constant loud running, rattling, or complete silence when it should be cooling all point to a compressor or fan fault — that's the point to stop investigating and call.
6. Water where it shouldn't be
Pooling water inside or underneath usually means a blocked defrost drain — annoying, common, and fixable. It's also an early warning worth acting on before it becomes a bigger fault.
