An oven that's stone cold at dinner time feels like an emergency, but not every cold oven is broken. A couple of the most common causes take two minutes to check and cost nothing to fix. Here's the order we'd check things in — and the point where it's genuinely an engineer's job.
1. The clock and timer
This is the one that catches everyone out. On most ovens, if the clock is flashing after a power cut — or the timer has been nudged into automatic mode — the oven simply refuses to heat. It looks dead; it's actually waiting for instructions.
Reset the clock and make sure the timer is in manual mode (usually a hand or pot symbol). It's the first thing our engineers check, because it turns a callout into a handshake surprisingly often.
2. The fuse board
If the oven is completely dead — no light, no fan, no display — check whether it has tripped the electrics. A tripped breaker that resets and holds might just have been a one-off. One that trips again as soon as the oven heats up usually means a failing element leaking to earth, and that's a repair, not a reset.
3. Fan running, but no heat
If the fan whirrs and the light is on but the oven stays cold, you're most likely looking at the classic fan-oven fault: a failed element. It's one of the most common repairs we do, the parts are reasonable, and it's almost always worth fixing rather than replacing the oven.
4. Heats, but cooks unevenly
An oven that's hot but unpredictable — burning one shelf, undercooking another, or drifting off the set temperature — usually points to a thermostat fault or a worn door seal letting heat escape. Both are routine repairs.
When to call us
If the clock is set, the electrics hold, and the oven still won't heat properly, it's element, thermostat or control territory — jobs for trained hands, especially with mains electricity involved. Don't be tempted to open the back yourself.
